Effective Ways Of Deep Etching
- April 30, 2018
Deep etching is a familiar term to graphic designers or those touring the design career path. It may sound strange to a newbie, unlike Photoshop that is all too well known. Deep etching in the graphic design the world is a term used to remove a portion of a picture or an image from the initial background, making the picture or image stand on its own, away from the original picture and background. Deep etching gives you the option of using the removed portion in a different background or style.
Deep etching is one of the frequently used tools in Photoshop, used either for highlighting an image or objects by making them background burr so that particular color will pop out and looks more defined
and bright or used to put an image or object on a plain white background. Remember cutting out a picture or image from one of your favorite magazines when you were a kid and placing it a plain paper or cardboard? Deep etching is the digital form, where you cut it out digitally in photoshop and then place it in another place. For a newbie, the art of deep etching takes a lot of practice and patience, it is just not something that is learned and perfected overnight. You will have to keep your practice and exercise patience while at it. That is why experts will advise that you begin with simple objects.
Methods Of Effective Deep Etching
Basically, there are three basic methods to apply when deep etching in Photoshop and they are:-
(1) The Eraser Tool Method
This method involves using the eraser tool in Photoshop to clean off the portion of the picture which you
don’t need manually. This method, however, is not exactly precise as you end up having rough edges and the image will clearly look like it’s been edited. This method takes a longer time in other to achieve a perfect deep-etched image or picture.
(2) The Color Tool Method
This is the second method of deep etching and it involves using the color selection option in Photoshop to completely delete or take off the colors that you do not want as well as reduce the brightness of those
unwanted colors from the picture and leaving the wanted colors. Like the first method, this too poses a problem which is the fact that the original picture you are working with has lots of colored pixels, and if you are not careful as a beginner, you might end up deleting too many colors or too few colors, thereby
distorting the picturing completely.
(3) The Pen Tool Method
This is the third and the most preferred method of deep etching if you ask me. This method simply entails using the pen tool option in Photoshop to deep etch the part of the picture you need. Some advantages are tied to this method which includes the fact that you don’t get to tamper with the original picture by deleting any unwanted image or color. It gives you the opportunity to continue to twirl and twist the picture until you are 100% satisfied with the end result you get. You have total control over the tool so you can do with it as you please until your work is looking like that of a professional. Once you have mastered the art, no one will be able to see the tell-tale sign that the image has been touched; it will look as original as new as ever. Like earlier said, it takes time to master the art and become good, but once you are done, you are good to go! There will be nothing that you cannot perfectly deep etch.
Who Should Use Deep Etching?
Apart from those in the graphic design field, photographers, online store owners, application (app) developers, E-commerce site owners, web designers, 3d artists, cartoonists, and animators should also
use deep etching. It helps them define their work properly, unwanted edges and images will be neatly taken out without anyone knowing, and the images when seen on a website will look very real and beautiful.
Advantages Of Using Deep Etching
The main reason for deep etching is to remove the image from the original background and place it on another plain and clear background of your choice. Deep etching allows you the option to experiment and try out other backgrounds until you are satisfied.
It helps you cut out unwanted parts of the picture as well as other picture noise and disturbing images. This is important because it gives your picture more focus. For E-commerce site owners for example, if
you have a picture of a black low back midi dress for sale, on a very busy and the floral patterned background will pose as a distraction for your customers, using deep etching will help you take out the picture and place it neatly on another background that will show the black dress in a better view.
It affords the opportunity of doing advanced color correction on your image. It helps you select the needed color separately, work on it and give it a more defined shade and glow. The colors stand out and pop out.
Deep etching helps to keep the main and important part of the picture in place while working on it by applying Photoshop masking on some areas of the image. For a 3d artist, it helps you to retouch the image very subtly and slightly without marring the 3d effect that you created.
Deep etching is the most widely used method of image enhancing and editing in Photoshop. It is easy to use and it will save you a lot of frustration and cursing that leads to constantly slipping into a sad mood because you did not get your desired result. Every artist at all levels, E-commerce site owners, online shop sites, etc. should make use of it because it is sure to boost your sales as images will appear real, unique, and true to your customers and viewers. They will be moved to make
the purchase by seeing the image.
